June 23rd, 2021 marks International Women in Engineering Day #INWED2021
We want to take a moment to celebrate the women of engineering at Fullscript. The working landscape looks so different than it did when many of us were going through school and thinking about what we wanted to be when we grew up. Software development has become one of the most coveted jobs in the global market.
In a profession primarily dominated by men, how can we inspire women from diverse backgrounds to pursue a career in engineering? We have to start by sharing our stories.
Sometimes, I can’t help but think: maybe I would have more seriously considered becoming an engineer if I were exposed to more female leaders in engineering or more coding courses during school. However, the rate that we move in the tech industry is unlike anything else. It’s never too late to pursue this path. Trust and autonomy are things you work for, but they come quickly. The feeling of building something that makes a difference in the lives of the user is unlike anything else I’ve experienced in my career.
A recent report on women in leadership written by the Canadian Women’s Foundation stated that 67% of women said they had learned the most important lessons about leadership from other women.recent report It feels so great to know that Fullscript executes diverse hiring practices and makes community connections in the markets we operate in.
Although it’s been harder to connect while we’re all working from home, events like the Fullscript Lean In Circle, our Diversity Debunked series and donut meet-ups have had the most impact on me personally in the last year. The women in engineering at Fullscript have been central to these events and I hope this just continues to grow over the coming years.
Careers are rarely linear. Engineers have to adapt to their environment. They pick up languages and learn new skills regularly. For many of my coworkers, this is what excites them the most. It’s incredible that there is a profession in which learning every day is part of the job description — seeing engineers take on new challenges never ceases to amaze me.
As you read the stories of our #EngineeringHeroes at Fullscript, pay attention to what inspired them and what they did to reach their position today. Not everyone went to school to study computer science or engineering.
The emergence of coding boot camps has positively impacted people’s ability to enter the job market and learn relevant skills to get started right away. This is an exciting and accessible change, and I hope it inspires some readers to think outside the box.
So without further adieu, here are their stories. We thank everyone for sharing with us and hope that by further telling the stories of our amazing team we can inspire more women who are thinking about plunging into the world of software and engineering to take the leap.
